Is it true that white people prefer light skin blacks?

Well I'm not black, I'm south asian but am pretty dark and I've dated a english white guy, he said he loves dark skin and loved my skin colour. Sorry to state the obvious but all guys are different some love darker exotic skin and some prefer fairer skin.
