My dog may have kennel cough, what is safe to use as treatment if I merely suspect she does?

I've used Robitussin (childrens liquid) with success in shelter dogs that come with kennel cough, however if a temperature comes on, you will need an antibiotic which you can only obtain through a veterinarian.
