I don't understand the end of the movie Fallen(1998)?

at the end of the movie john hobbes(Denzel Washington) out smarts Azazel,but how is it that azazel doesn't take hobbes body and live off his,but he doesnt and azazel dies...hobbes lives,but it shows hobbes dieing at the end..and says he is still alive....please help
