Why would god give us the ability to question him?

If it's wrong to question god and doubt him, why did he give us the ability to do so? Why does he need to test us? For some sick thrills? If god is full of love, why didn't he just create us all as happy, dumb creatures that always get along and never question anything? He wants to see his children fail and burn for exhibiting the traits he gave us in the first place?
